Art Is All There Is, & Love
5000 videos (2017-2022)
by Mimi Allin
Hey love bugs,
This February, as we come off the heels of what was truly a grand self-portrait group show, we’re tickled to be exhibiting a body of video works by poet and performance artist Mimi Allin. Allin’s studio practice investigates the notion of “self” through improvisational movement practice, conceptual and performance art. Using her body as visual territory for knowledge production, healing, and exploration, Allin seeks to generate critical commentary on gender, power and human relationships… something we can all reflect on as Valentine’s Day will be soon upon us. This body of over 5000! videos teaches transformation by reclaiming the body and its charged relation to the landscape, falling cathartically into and out of rhythm with the world, eliciting humor and reflection while exploring contemporary 4th wave feminist themes.
Allin has crossed the Pacific Ocean by sailboat twice, worked as a climbing ranger on Mt Rainier, served in the Peace Corps in Poland, taught English Literature in Mongolia and spent a month alone in a 14′ boat in The Graveyard of the Pacific. Using few materials (often found objects) in open and urban landscapes, she creates movement performances that are sometimes long and grueling. Aside from her poetry and conceptual art practice, Allin works as the Program Manager at the Holden Village Spiritual Retreat Center in Chelan, WA.
