Alexis Hilliard
Pieces of the Sublime
This May, PUNCH presents the work of Portland-based Alexis Hilliard, who specializes in captivating and complex handmade paper collages. Constructed from hundreds of pieces, the compositions vibrate rhythmically with swirling, minute details. Varying in size and subject matter, her collages depict surreal landscapes, fantastical narratives and haunting yet sublime compositions. All of Alexis’ collage process is traditional and analog, old-fashion cut-and-paste, then mounted on panels and varnished like a painting upon completion. As a counterpoint to this old-school technique, Alexis documents the making of each collage through a video record of the fabrication process, thereby making this finessed and labor-intensive work all-the-more engaging and compelling.
Though she uses computers for the research process and archival printing, Alexis does not use Photoshop or digital manipulation of her source materials to help create her craft; rather simple, yet profound transformations by way of glue and scissors for a post-modern age. Through this process, Alexis explores themes of warfare, labor, portraiture, myth, history and nature, and in doing so, she aims to expand and evolve the merits and possibilities of collage through a contemporary fine art practice.
